Introduction

The department was established in the year 2008 under the Faculty of Natural Sciences, with an aim to foster the next generation of biomedical researchers through classroom (teaching) and laboratory training for students, graduate researchers and postdoctoral fellows. Initially, from the year 2001-2007, courses at the level of under graduate (B.Sc. Biotechnology) and Masters (M.Sc. Biotechnology) were offered in self-finance mode, which later were upgraded to the regular academic courses offered by the University. The department also offers full time Ph.D. (in Biotechnology), 48 students are currently enrolled in Ph.D.

The department is equipped with fully air-conditioned offices, classrooms and research laboratories. The department has produced more than 14 undergraduate/postgraduate batches and most of the pass outs have successfully made their entry into various reputed Institutions of the Country and abroad, and settled in either academics and/or Industry.

The department currently has nine faculty members, who run nine different research laboratories undertaking cutting edge, molecularly focused basic science research in the areas including- Cardiovascular genomics, metabolism, molecular virology, Cancer, enzymology, infectious diseases, plant stress biology and protein biochemistry. The research is facilitated by various collaborations amongst faculty with expertise in different disciplines, which has further enabled the faculty and research staff to direct core facilities, heading shared instrumentation grants as well as teaching undergraduate/postgraduate students and above all playing key roles in training grants and Ph.D. programs besides holding leading administrative positions at the University. The research at the department is supported by various Extramural schemes from major funding agencies including SERB-DST, AYUSH, UGC, CSIR, DBT, ICMR besides other internationally collaborative funded programs- SPARC. The department has published more than 100 research articles/chapters in journals/books of national and international repute. The faculty members at the department play leading roles in the international and national research community by the activities including chairing scientific committees, organizing Conferences, symposia and other workshops and scientific sessions. Some faculty members also serve on various National scientific boards including DBT, DST, ICMR-DHR; participating on advisory boards for various programs, national technology resources within and outside university; besides serving as journal editors, editorial board members and committee members of various scientific professional communities.

The department has succeeded admirably in its mission.
